Juneteenth

A brief yet important explanation.

Two years after Abraham Lincoln declared the end of slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation  (January 1, 1863) African Americans in Galveston, Texas were still in slavery. It was not until June 19, 1865, that African Americans in Texas finally learned that slavery had been abolished ...they began to celebrate with prayer, song, dance, and feasting.

Today, this moment in history is celebrated and used as a symbolic representation of what took place across the United States of America as slaves continued to learn of the freedom . It wasn't  just Galveston, Texas, but other Confederate states were still practicing slavery as well.

Juneteenth is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate liberation of oppressed cultures and the awakening of oppressed minds.

Tri-State Expo Juneteenth Affairs Visits
the Clotilda Location In Spanish Fort, AL

The wreck of the schooner Clotilda, believed to be the last known ship to bring enslaved people to the US from Africa, has been found in the Alabama’s Mobile River, the Alabama Historical Commission announced.

“The discovery of the Clotilda is an extraordinary archaeological find,” Lisa Demetropoulos Jones, executive director of the Alabama Historical Commission, said in a statement. “The voyage represented one of the darkest eras of modern history and is a profound discovery of the tangible evidence of slavery.”
